PHL has its origins in Montreal, Quebec, in 1973 when its founder, Gilbert Rousseau, opened his first sporting goods store. Today, the company has 23 hockey specialty stores, operating in Quebec under the banners Sports Rousseau and L'Entrepot du Hockey and in rest of Canada under the banner Pro Hockey Life, and continues rapid expansion into major metropolitan areas across Canada.
