Coquitlam School District invites applications from individuals for the position of Settlement Worker (Mandarin and English speaking and writing). The Settlement Worker reports to a District Administrator/ Designate (School Administrator/ Designate when working in a school). Responsibilities include liaising with immigrant students and families to assess, prioritize, and accommodate newcomer needs through orientation, information, and referrals, and then providing feedback to the schools about the work done with their families.

Required Knowledge and Skills : A 2-year diploma in child/youth care from a recognized college/institution or completion of two years of university course work in Psychology or Sociology or other relevant subject areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Up to one (1) year of directly related experience.

Knowledge of the Canadian and cross culture issues and an understanding of problems, concerns and strengths in these traditions, and the communication and interpersonal skills to assist with the bridging of cultures.

Knowledge of the processes of acculturation. Ability to adapt to changing situations and to develop and maintain rapport with students, parents, staff, and community members.A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License. Business use of personal vehicle required.

Oral and written fluency in English plus Mandarin is mandatory.
