Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Manager of Literacy & Language Services, the Instructor provides instruction to small groups of adult learners with a specific program focus (i.e. ESL, LBS, LINC) in accordance with respective and established assessment standards. The instructor consults with the Manager of Literacy & Language Services to deliver program assignments and works collaboratively within a team environment to ensure that appropriate programming is delivered accordingly to applicable and designated Ministry and Board requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience:

Possess a three year university degree or three year college diploma with a concentration in education, social work, sociology, psychology, linguistics or applied languages or in a related field. Familiarity with community support agencies pertaining to adult, family or employment-related issues is preferred.

A minimum of 2 years ESL instruction of adults is preferred. Related employment or volunteer experience in teaching, social work or immigration services is an asset. TESL qualifications or teaching qualifications in ESL is required.

Skills Required: Demonstrated understanding of the basic precepts of adult education

Knowledge and ability to use Canadian Language Benchmarks effectively (where applicable to program focus)

Demonstrated ability to make logical decisions

Strong interpersonal skills, ability to function as a role model and a self starter

Demonstrated patience and understanding, adaptability and flexibility

Strong communication skills (written and oral)

Attention to detail and accuracy

Ability to learn new software database systems

Well developed listening skills

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a variety of responsibilities concurrently

Ability to prioritize tasks, set objectives, plan work in advance and meet deadlines

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills

Demonstrated ability to respect and maintain confidentiality of information

Proficient with word processing, database programs and e-mail e.g. WordPerfect/Word, Excel, Outlook e-mail, internet
