The overall goal of this position is to help improve the personal and academic success of Secondary students with Indigenous ancestry. Reporting to the District Principal of Indigenous Education, the Coordinator will work with members of the Indigenous Education department as well as with members of the Learning Services team, specifically in Inclusive Learning, to help provide wrap-around support for students.

The Secondary Indigenous Success Coordinator position will have as the main areas of focus to: Collaborate with Inclusive Learning team members and school personnel, to develop individualized success plans for students with social/ emotional needs ensuring they are equitable and will be implemented and supported at the school level.

Collaborate with members of the Inclusive Learning team to review students and families with Indigenous ancestry who are requiring: tier 3 supports; assistance to re-engage students in school; or guidance with outside agency supports. The students may have high or low incidence designations and corresponding needs.

Communicate with school personnel (Administrators, Teachers, Counsellors, Career Advisors, EAs, CYCWs) to discuss the needs of students who have been brought to School Based Team or who have been flagged by the Indigenous Education team monitoring process of attendance and grad course completion.

Coordinate and schedule the Social/Emotional Behavioural Strategists (SEBS) to work with students who are experiencing behavioral difficulties or disengagement with school. This will include developing customized/unique success plans (unique from Individual Education Plans) with the SEBS for students with complex needs that will be shared with the schools.

Develop and monitor a systematic program for tracking secondary student success (including attendance and grad course completion data)

Attend CARE team meetings and help families navigate school, district, and community support and services to ensure a holistic wraparound approach is created for student success.

Attend regular meetings in the Indigenous Education Department and the Learning Services department to ensure success plans are in place and revised as necessary

Work in partnership with the Tsawwassen First Nation Education Department staff as the Indigenous Education department meets with them on a bi-weekly basis to review secondary TFN students.

Organize, promote and accompany Post-Secondary visits for Indigenous students in grades 9-12 (i.e. visits to KPU, KPU Trades, UBC, SFU, Native Education College, and others as seen fit). Coordinate new secondary initiatives that are offered by outside agencies (ie Blade Runners , ACCESS, Paul Martin initiative) and are a good fit for the students.

Provide professional learning opportunities for teachers on relevant topics throughout the school year.

Collaborate with members of the Indigenous Education team to organize and deliver various events (e.g. Indigenous Family nights, National Indigenous Peoples Day, etc)

Work with the Indigenous Education team to support transitions - Gr 7 to 8, Grade 9-10 and 12 to Post-Secondary

Perform other duties as required Qualification and Experience Preferred: Masters Degree in Education, Special Education Diploma or coursework and/or Counseling degree. Level B Assessment course is also preferred.

Demonstrated and thorough understanding of the historical context of the Indigenous population, and the effects of trauma on Indigenous communities; and the strengths-based perspective gained through education, professional observation, and practice.

An awareness and understanding of the TRC Calls to Action and the District goal of Equity for all learners.

Experience with using positive behaviour support strategies, functional behaviour assessment, Violent Threat Risk Assessment, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI), and TraumaInformed approaches.

Excellent organizational and communication skills to support educators in the work of creating and sustaining inclusive and accessible learning environments and opportunities for students and their families.

A solid understanding of ways to support students with social, emotional, mental health and behavioral support needs

Experience working as a member of various school and district-level teams in support of student success.

An ability to provide leadership for families and schools to liaise with provincial resource programs, the Ministry of Children and Family Development and various agencies supporting Indigenous children, youth and their families.

Understanding graduation requirements, and the opportunities available to students, to assist them in achieving enrolment in post-secondary options.
