Acting Subject Coordinator - First Nation Programs and Services

Reporting to: Nihkanatpat ciw Skicinowi Kehkiketowaken - Director - Leader for Indigenous Teachings

Effective August 12, 2024 until August 22, 2025 with the possibility of extension

Overview:

The Coordinator for First Nations Education plays a pivotal role in advancing the objectives of the Enhanced First Nation Education Programs and Services Agreement within the Anglophone West School District. This position is responsible for fostering collaborative relationships with teachers, school administrators, district Subject Coordinators, and Communities within Wolastoqey Nation to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes of First Nations students. The Coordinator oversees lead teachers, manages budgets, and cultivates partnerships to benefit the educational journey of Indigenous youth. This job involves extensive travel through the Anglophone West School District at times including overnight stays.Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Collaboration: Work closely with teachers, school administrators, district Subject Coordinators, and Wolastoqey Nation communities to centralize First Nations education within classroom and school environments.

Provide guidance and support to lead teachers and other stakeholders involved in First Nations education initiatives.

Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that respects and integrates diverse perspectives and cultural knowledge.

Program Oversight and Management : Oversee the implementation of the Enhanced First Nation Education Programs and Services Agreement, ensuring alignment with district goals and objectives.

Support and action elements of the District First Nation Education Plan.

Manage budgets and spending related to First Nations education initiatives, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support student success.

Monitor program effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements based on data and feedback from stakeholders.

Relationship Building and Partnership Development: Establish and maintain respectful and meaningful relationships with Wolastoqey Nation communities, organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.

Cultivate partnerships and collaborations to enhance educational opportunities and support services for First Nations students attending Anglophone West School District schools.

Advocacy and Representation : Advocate for the needs and interests of First Nations students within the school district and broader community.

Represent the interests of First Nations students in meetings, forums, and other public engagements.

Serve as a strong advocate for Indigenous youth, promoting their empowerment and success in education and beyond.

Professional Development: Maintain awareness of issues and developments in First Nations education through reading, workshops, conferences, and active membership in professional associations. Identify professional development needs within the school district in cooperation with the Director of First Nations Education.

Family and Community Engagement: Maintain open and welcoming communication and positive relationships with families, students, and members of the community.

Act as a liaison between schools and knowledge keepers, language carriers, elders, and other Indigenous partners and organizations.

Resource Exploration and Support: Explore and vet resources that might act as instructional materials in the general classroom to support language and cultural teachings.

Establish and maintain a collection of curriculum materials and resources to support First Nations education initiatives.

Qualifications: A valid New Brunswick Teachers Certificate, and Masters Degree (relevant professional learning and lived experience may serve as an alternative to Masters Degree)

A minimum of five years relevant educational experience in the public or Band-operated school system.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusting relationships and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Demonstrated experience in project management, budget oversight, and program evaluation.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to multitask effectively.

Passionate about improving the lives and educational outcomes of First Nations students.

Assertive, kind, open-minded, and dedicated to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Additional Assets: Basic or better speaking skills in Wolastoqey.

Knowledge of the Band-operated school system.

Knowledge of Jordans Principle.

Lived experience and cultural knowledge within Wolastoqey Nation, including a general knowledge of First Nations governance structures and community relations.

Salary: This is a Management and Non-Union Position (12-month) and is compensated as Pay Band 7, with an annual salary range of $86,970 $105,222 per annum.
