Education Assistant - American Sign Language Focus Wage: $31.00 per hour

Summary:

MPSD is currently recruiting for the position of Education Assistant to work with complex students, specifically requiring support with significant Hearing Differences, Autism, and Intellectual Disability.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Under the guidance of the Inclusive Support Teacher/Case Manager Implement, plan, and collaborate regarding strategies listed in the Individual Education Plans

Assist students with personal hygiene requirements

Implement Positive Behavior Support and Safety Plans

Reinforce the educational program by tutoring, adapting, or modifying classroom materials, under the direction of the teacher, to meet the specialized needs of students with ASD.

Assist student with Significant Hearing Differences and ASD in acquiring skills in communication and language development, behavior and social skills

Facilitate language acquisition through play

Assist students putting on or taking off hearing devices

Supervises assigned students at recess and lunch and oversees and encourages interaction with other students Required Qualifications Training in American Sign Language in an accredited program within the last 3 years.

ASL requirement: ASLPI level 3

Completion of a recognized certificate in Inclusive Education Assistant or related courses

Training in Autism Spectrum Disorder Required Skills and Abilities Proven interest in, and ability to work with children who may have learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and challenging behaviours

Good observation, articulation and listening discrimination skills and the ability to keep accurate notes

Ability to demonstrate nurturing and sensitivity toward students with widely varied backgrounds and abilities

Flexibility and patience to work effectively with the varied needs of students being served

Ability to assist learning in a variety of subjects

Willing to participate in related in-service training

Excellent communication skills to work with students and to provide feedback to teachers, principals and, within district guidelines, parents

an ability to learn and follow prescribed educational programs and methods to assist students

a willingness to learn methods and become certified for procedures such as tube feeding, seizure management, glucose monitoring, etc.
