Position: Child and Youth in Care Advocate (CYCA)
FTE: .20 Mondays
Grade: District K to 12
Status: Temporary
Start Date: As soon as possible
End Date: June 30, 2025
Reporting to the Director of Instruction, Student Services, the CYCA will be responsible for coordinating services for children and youth in care in Mission Public Schools.
The Advocates role is to promote communication among educators, social workers, foster parents, Ministry of Children and Families, and outside agencies so that children and youth in care feel a greater sense of belonging and have the tools they need to be successful at school. Through the committed work of the advocate in building relationships and acting as a consistent key contact person for the school district, you will focus on documented transition planning, monitoring progress, removing barriers for higher levels of educational goals and attainment.
Qualifications: A valid BC teaching certificate
Masters degree in counselling, Inclusive Education or related field
Training or Certification in Indigenous Pedagogy and/or Cultural Safety
Trauma Informed Practice Training
Training in the area of non-violent crisis intervention or has taken non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training or Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training
Knowledge of Integrated Case Management (ICM) and the ability to work well with outside agencies
The ability to case manage students with complex profiles specifically writing Individual Educational Plans (IEP)
Experience and ability to relate and connect with priority students in a non-judgmental patient and optimistic manner
Strong relationship and collaboration skills working with school-based professionals as well as community partners, students and parents would be an asset
Understanding of post-secondary planning, transition planning and employment readiness programs Job Duties: Meet with Xyolhemeylh and MCFD to verify students in our district
Co-case manage students with the counsellor and/or LSAT for students in Middle and Secondary School
Develop plans to including transition to adulthood
Monitor the transition plan for children in care from K-12
Monitor the transition plan for children in care in and out of the school district
Student Progress Reports to Director of Student Services four times per year
Present to Committee of the Whole or Board on work supporting children in care
Liaise with community agencies and attend ICM meetings for children in care
Complete paperwork for children and youth with continuing custody orders
Complete MAPS and PATHS where appropriate for students
Liaison with students teachers, and ask for updates on student progress
Use gathered information acknowledging success and or need for additional support- tutoring
Initiate formal educational plan, one which outlines goals and the necessary steps toward achieving those goals
Guardian /Parent/Elder/Student- Social Worker/Teacher Evening orientation to post- secondary
Create opportunities for students to volunteer
Course selection- ensure it fits with their program
Introduce students to career advisor
Introduce students in care to the YEAF document. (Youth Educational Assistance Fund)
Provide opportunity for students to have mock interviews- video tape, so they can critique
Provide opportunity to review and complete mock post- secondary applications
Field study to Thompson Rivers University/ and or BCIT/and or Nicola Valley
Ensure paperwork is completed for applications, for students who qualify, for Youth Educational Assistance Fund for Former Youth in Care Child and Family Services- YEAF
Individual liaison with post- secondary schools- enroll in post- secondary
