THE ROLE

The Youth Engagement Worker (YEW) is a specialized position assigned to the schools with links to Community Services and to the Community Learning Program. The YEW has the primary responsibility for engaging at-risk and vulnerable youth through relationships and programming that is designed to help them increase their life chances for success.

The Youth Engagement Worker as part of an integrated educational team assists in the planning, development and delivery of programs and supports. These programs and supports promote the social, emotional and personal development of at-risk, vulnerable students in schools or alternate programs. The YEW's core function is to engage and support young people in a process of change.

The successful YEW will work closely with other members of the school based team and Community Learning Program team to ensure that each young person is moving toward student engagement, independent learning and making good life choices.

The YEW establishes connections with vulnerable youth with the goal of increasing their life chances for success. This is done through outreach support and liaising with community to develop before and after school programs for at-risk, vulnerable youth. The YEW is responsible for mentoring and supporting at-risk youth to identify and access the necessary district and community supports and programs that will enable them to acquire the skills to transition successfully to adulthood.

The YEW works with considerable independence under the direction of the Choices teacher, school administrator and a district team that evaluates and monitors the effectiveness of child and youth worker programs and supports.
