The School District

The Pacific Rim School District covers much of Central Vancouver Islands rugged, picturesque West Coast and serves a regional population of approximately 31,000 residing in the communities of Port Alberni, Tofino, Ucluelet, Bamfield and other remote communities. The schools are situated on the ha-houlthee of the ci?aa?at?, hupacasath, tla-o-qui-aht, Yuulu?il?at?, and Huu-ay-aht First Nations. The school district respectfully acknowledges that it works alongside all Nuu-chah-nulth Nations, other First Nations, and Metis and Inuit of British Columbia to serve all children and youth of the Alberni-Clayoquot region.

The district is home to 4000 students, 35% of whom are of Indigenous ancestry, in two neighbourhood secondary schools, eight elementary schools, and one K-9 school. The district has a successful alternate learning centre, a strong French Immersion program, a thriving international student program, and a busy continuing education program.

The School

Maquinna Elementary School is located in the city of Port Alberni and enrolls approximately 300 students.

The School Vice Principal

Preferred candidates will have classroom or administrative experience in elementary or middle school settings, as well as strong, positive interpersonal skills and recognized involvement in building effective school and community relations. Candidates will show a commitment to improved achievement for all learners, including the ability to engage staff in the creation of a professional learning community that considers research, best practice, and student data to guide instruction and to develop school plans.

The Vice Principal is hired to the District and will be placed initially at Maquinna Elementary School.

Key qualities, attributes and experiences include: Knowledge of current educational trends and best practice relating to instruction and assessment, emphasizing best practice in literacy and numeracy instruction

Knowledge of and successful implementation of effective programs that reflect the cultural and academic needs of Indigenous students.

Knowledge of and experience with social and emotional learning, mental health, and well-being research and curriculum

Ability to develop fair and effective student behaviour support systems.

Knowledge of and experience in effective ways to use technology as tools to enhance student learning

Strong personal and professional vision

Interest in, and, ideally, experience with out of the box thinking with respect to developing programs that meet the needs of students living in a rural, outdoor centered community

Visible commitment to life-long learning and professional learning Qualifications A valid British Columbia teaching certificate

Completion of or significant progress towards a Masters Degree in education or related field

Successful teaching experience in an elementary school settingSalary Range: $127,089 - $134, 284
