TITLE: Truth & Reconciliation Lead Teacher (POSR) DEPARTMENT: Indigenous Education

REPORTS TO: Vice Principal, Indigenous Education SUMMARY

Rooted in the First Peoples Principles of Learning, TRC Calls to Action, and UNDRIP, the Truth & Reconciliation Lead Teacher drives understanding, reconciliation, and decolonization within our educational system. The role focuses on integrating Indigenous content, ways of knowing and practices into the curriculum, pedagogy, and culture, while providing leadership, support, and collaboration with staff, students, and the community to implement TRC initiatives, facilitating meaningful change tailored to the needs of students, families, and the community.

DUTIES : Program and Resource Development:

Develop and implement programs enhancing student self-esteem, responsibility, and relationships appropriate to developmental stages and individual abilities.

Develop and implement resources that reflect the history, perspectives, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, inclusive of local First Nations, aligning with TRC principles. Teacher Mentorship and Support:

Provide professional development to deepen staff understanding of Indigenous histories, rights and perspectives.

Mentor and support educators in integrating Indigenous content and methodologies.

Lead and role model leadership in classroom, school-wide and district activities.

Support teachers with understanding and activating TRC Calls to Action

Assist educators in implementing initiatives that foster a supportive school environment for Indigenous learners and staff.

Assist staff with progress reports, culturally appropriate intervention plans, enrichment opportunities, Individual Education Plans, and gathering of student information as appropriate. Community Engagement:

Collaborate with local Indigenous communities for culturally relevant and responsive educational initiatives that enrich learning experiences.

Liaison between school, district, community services, Indigenous partners, and families to support Indigenous student growth.

Participate in district meetings and/or communities of practice as relevant to conducting duties. Student Support and Advocacy:

Advocate for Indigenous perspectives in student activities, events, and policies.

Support Indigenous students in accessing resources and opportunities that celebrate their identities and cultural heritage.

Provide direct supports for students using Indigenous approaches to leadership, conflict resolution, and life skills.

Support social, emotional, academic, physical and cultural learning needs for Indigenous students.

Foster positive connections with families and encourage participation in the school community.

Assist students and families in understanding and activating TRC Calls to Action.

Research, Data and Evaluation:

Conduct ongoing research to assess the effectiveness of Truth and Reconciliation initiatives

Maintain accurate student data and use it to refine educational practices.

Other:

Collaborate with the Indigenous Education Principal/Vice-Principal and/or district staff, and undertake additional responsibilities as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS :

Truth and Reconciliation Lead Teachers should meet the following qualifications: Professional teaching certificate

Bachelor's degree in education, Indigenous Studies, or related field (Master's preferred).

Experience with curriculum and resource development

Deep understanding of the TRC Call to Action, UNDRIP, and their educational implications.

Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with diverse rights holders and partners

Commitment to ongoing personal and professional growth in Indigenous knowledge and reconciliation practices.
