1.0 FTE position in the area of District English Language Learning Teacher (Elementary/Secondary)

This is a continuing contract position.

This position is effective September 1, 2024.

While all applicants will be considered, preference will be given to qualified applicants who self-declare Indigenous ancestry.

The starting annual salary for a school teacher position ranges from $60,000 to $110,000, with placement on the range based on the length of service and qualifications in accordance in accordance with the collective agreement. Positions of Special Responsibility receive an additional pay allowance in accordance with the collective agreement based on the levels 1, 2, or 3.

English Language Learning Teacher

ELL Specialists are responsible for supporting, planning, and the delivery of programs and services for English language learning experiences. Learning experiences should assist students to learn the English language, understand Canadian culture and acquire the skills and background necessary to function in an English speaking environment and integrate as smoothly as possible.Roles & Responsibilities:

To provide assessment to determine appropriate placement and program design to ensure successful English language acquisition for students.

To teach ELL students English language content with the intention of language acquisition and full participation in educational opportunities in schools.

To support classroom teachers in providing ELL instructional strategies, ideas for programming and reporting achievement, and information related to cultural differences to support inclusion of each student in the regular classroom.Qualifications:

Professional certification enabling membership with the BC Teacher Regulation Branch.

Minimum of two years successful classroom teaching experience preferably at the level that the ELL teacher will support.

A diploma in Applied Linguistics or Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate from an accredited post-secondary institution. This certificate must include a minimum of 6 units of study and include topics necessary for instruction of ELL students such as, communication, reading, speaking, writing, vocabulary and grammar.Relevant practical experience is an asset: teaching ELL students, living in another culture for a period of time, long term study of a second language, cross cultural communication skills.

Where a fully qualified ELL teacher is not available preference will be given to candidates with partial qualifications plus a written commitment to complete the requirements within an agreed upon length of time.
