Summer Student - Design and Construction

Job Purpose Join us this summer for an exciting opportunity to participate in school board design and construction. The successful candidate will assist with a full range of functions, providing support to the Design and Construction Team of the Durham District School Board (DDSB).Accountabilities:This summer, your role is to work with general guidance and direction from the Design and Construction Team. You will join in supporting the end-to-end construction of projects by assisting with Design Development, Contract Documentation and Construction Reviews.Some areas that you will be involved in are:Assist the Team as they lead an external team of consultants, engineers, architects and contractors as they design and construct new schools and major additions. Review plans for accessibility, code compliance and alignment with DDSB strategic plans and commitments.Support the Team as they monitor progress and develop reports to ensure project plans (timelines, budgets) of varying complexities (new schools, new additions) and lengths (multi-year) are met successfully, in compliance with DDSB policies, Ministry requirements, and various legislative regulations. Participate in weekly site inspections at every stage of the project, from pre-construction to post-occupancy to evaluate and document site conditions, progress, and identify future issues, while ensuring that construction is completed in compliance with the agreed upon design.

Education:Post-secondary or Graduate student in architecture, construction management, or a related discipline.

Must be enrolled for the following school year.Experience, Knowledge and Skills:Working knowledge and experience with the Building Code is an asset

Ability to work independently and within a team

Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office programs, including Microsoft Excel

Strong communication skills, both written and oral

Sound judgement, analytical, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and organizational skillsPlease note:Salary: $23.00 per hourPosition Start Date: May 1, 2024

Position End Date: August 22, 2024The successful candidate will work:

o7 hour days from Monday to Friday between May 1, 2024 June 30, 2024
