The Yukon First Nation Education Directorate (YFNED) has partnered with the Yukon First Nation School Board in recruiting for this exciting new opportunity with YFNED.

YFNED is seeking a creative, motivated and determined individual to join our numeracy team. The Math Strategist provides numeracy coaching and academic guidance to assist educators with modifying teaching methods and gaining confidence in the application of math concepts through an Indigenous lens.

The position work as part of a dedicated team that supports Indigenous students and adult learners, including current classroom teachers with applying and learning math. Through encouragement and support, we empower youth to increase their skills and confidence in math for future academic success and application to activities in daily life.

We anticipate travelling with the First Nation School Board Numeracy team to support those schools working under the FNSB, and we will be supporting other schools and students who are under Ministry operated schools in the Yukon.

Our ideal candidate will have considerable experience working independently and be able to self-direct as necessary.

Experience working in education, preferably as a teacher in remote, northern communities is important. You will be familiar with the challenges of teaching in rural environments and will have a solution-oriented approach to supporting community teachers. A degree of understanding of teaching practices in multi-grade classrooms is desired.Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in Education or equivalent, with strong skills and abilities in numeracy and good understanding of mathematics;

Experience working with students and youth, preferably in a teaching capacity;

Experience implementing and adapting curriculum;

Experience teaching or mentoring adults is an asset;

Experience with outdoor education, on-the-land experiential or similar is an asset; Competent and experienced in the use of a variety of technology.

An awareness of educational, cultural and social issues affecting Indigenous children and youth in the Yukon is required for success.

An equivalent combination of education, inclusive of life experience and considerable experience in the areas identified above, may equally be considered.

Position requirements include:

Pre-employment acceptable RCMP security clearance and vulnerable sector search.

Regular travel within Whitehorse and to Yukon communities.

Valid class 5 drivers license, acceptable drivers abstract.
