It’s no surprise that job searching gets more difficult when you get frustrated. For many of us, rhymes and picture books are not the first place we go to seek advice. But sometimes the best advice comes from the most unlikely places. Just ask Dr. Seuss!
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…”
Believe it or not, searching for jobs is an opportunity to learn more about yourself and define your interests, while simultaneously discovering new ones. The more thoroughly you research, the more you will know about which direction is best for you. Remember, you’re in control of what you’re willing to learn every step of the way, so take time to make it count.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
In this day and age, there’s no reason to be uninformed because of the plethora of knowledge at our fingertips. Volunteering, networking both on and offline, and staying educated and involved in your field reinforce the fact that you’re more than passionate about what you’re doing. What’s more impressive to employers than that?
“You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so… get on your way!”
Job searching can leave you in limbo, but you’ve got to stay persistent and resist procrastination! Time wasted is time lost. You’ll surely miss out on opportunities with a lazy attitude, and Dr. Seuss would hate to hear that!
“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”
Yikes! Interviews can be intimidating. The questions may puzzle you, but it’s important to answer them clearly and with brevity. Keep your answers simple and honest, but don’t forget to include compelling indicators of why you’re perfect for the job. Relax, and just be yourself.
“It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become.”
Getting to the top is hard work, but that’s what makes the reward so worth it. To stay motivated, set both short- and long-term goals. How can your work fulfil you? “What it is,” will inspire you to explore who you will become.
Get out there! You can't wait for an opportunity to find you or for great things simply fall into your lap; you have to go out and make things happen. Be adventurous, take more chances, and find optimism, encouragement, and creativity from anywhere you can find it.
