When you’re starting out in your career, finding the right role at the right company can be difficult. At Canadian Tire, we value the diverse interests of young professionals and the knowledge they can bring to our organization. Our co-op program is a great foundation for students to launch a long-term career at Canadian Tire, one of Canada’s most iconic retailers.
When our co-op program began in 1999, only four departments hired students. Today, we hire hundreds of students across the organization in a variety of teams, including Marketing, Finance, Merchandising, Corporate Affairs, Supply Chain, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Digital.
Canadian Tire’s co-op programs are great for a number of reasons. They offer an opportunity to work on leading edge initiatives that are directly tied to our strategy, including data and analytics, digital IT, e-commerce, marketing, and employee engagement. Not only does our diverse set of roles mean that there is something for everyone, but it also means returning co-ops have the opportunity to move around within or between departments. Our co-ops have the chance to develop a range of skills and to see the business from a variety of perspectives.
The co-op community at Canadian Tire is close-knit. Through personal and professional events specifically organized for co-ops, students establish relationships with their peers and leaders. For example, Lunch and Learns with leaders are offered throughout each work term to help students gain the skills needed to successfully navigate the workplace and focus on personal branding, recruitment, and job growth. Students also have the opportunity to participate in offsite events and activities, like events for our national charitable program Jumpstart and trips to our state of the art distribution centre in Caledon, Ontario.
Lastly, our co-op programs also help to identify and develop future leaders and often translate into meaningful full-time work. Each year, co-op students are hired into full-time roles through one of our New Grad programs or an available entry-level position. We are proud to say that there are senior leaders within the Canadian Tire Family of Companies that got their start in our co-op program.
